Men's Soccer Defeats Colgate to Win Third-Straight

Echeverria and Ssessanga netted the Leopards two goals

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette men's soccer team defeated Colgate, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Oaks Stadium to improve to 3-0 in Patriot League action.

The Leopards were led by junior Will Echeverria and senior Martin Ssessanga who each netted a goal and junior Sebastian Varela who notched his first assist of the season. Sophomore Hale Lombard totaled a team-high three shots.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Sutton allowed one goal and made one save in 90 minutes of action.

Lafayette (2-0 North, 3-0 PL) jumped on the board quickly in the first half off a goal from Echeverria to put the Leopards up 1-0 two minutes into the game. The goal was the first of the junior midfielder's collegiate career.

The Leopards defense held the Raiders to just one shot in the first 45 minutes of action while the Leopards fired off five, with three being on goal.

Lafayette was quick to add a second goal at the start of the second half as Ssessanga found the back of the net in the 51st minute, with a shot into the lower left corner to make it 2-0 Leopards. The goal marked his second of the season and fourth of his career.

The Raiders (0-2 North, 0-2 PL) started to put on the pressure after the Leopards goal, outshooting the Maroon and White four shots to one. Their efforts eventually paid off as they were able to find the back of the net in the 86th minute to cut the Leopards lead in half. They then made one last effort to tie-up the game and send it into overtime but the shot went high and the Leopards were able to hang on for the 2-1 victory.

The win marked the Maroon and White's third-straight victory and kept them perfect in spring Patriot League action.

Up next for the Leopards is a trip to Boston, Massachusetts for a 6 p.m. matchup with the Boston U. Terriers on Saturday, March 27.
