Field Hockey Loses Hard-Fought Game to BU in OT

Hamilton scores 1st career goal

EASTON, Pa. — The Lafayette field hockey team showed much improvement on Sunday against Boston U., receiving  a second-half goal from sophomore forward Tara Hamilton, but the Leopards ultimately fell to the Terriers, 2-1, in overtime at Rappolt Field on a game-winning goal from Alexis Pettisani.

"We battled all game today," Lafayette head coach Jennifer Stone said. "It's a tough loss to swallow, but we played well. We significantly improved, especially in our backfield. They just got the last shot to go in."

After a scoreless first half, the Leopards slipped into a 1-0 hole 6:49 into the third period  after the Terriers received a goal from Liz Ryan on a scramble in front of the cage. But, the Maroon and White rallied to tie the game at 1 three minutes later after Hamilton scored her first career goal by sneaking the ball into the back of the cage off a loose ball in front of BU goalie Caroline Kelly.

"That was a big moment to get that goal," Stone said of Hamilton's score. "It got us back into the game."

In the fourth period, the Leopards had a chance to take the lead, as sophomore forward Felicitas Hannes found an opening on the left side and took a backhanded shot toward the goal, but Kelly made the save to keep the score tied at 1-all. BU had a couple of chances at the end of the period to score, but the Leopards' defense blocked a shot with nine seconds left to force overtime.

Unfortunately, the Terriers took home the victory in the first 2:15 of the extra session after Pettisani put the game-winner in from the right side.

The Leopards will try to break into the win column next Sunday when they travel to face Holy Cross for an 11 a.m. clash.
