Hefting’s OT Heroics Lift Field Hockey to 1st win

Leopards earn ‘important’ victory on road

WORCESTER, Mass. — Sophomore Simone Hefting scored the game-winning goal with 31 seconds left in overtime to lift the Lafayette field hockey team to its first win of the season on Sunday via a 2-1 victory over Holy Cross.

With the game tied, 1-1, the Leopards earned a penalty corner with 37 seconds remaining in the extra session. On the play, Hefting deflected the ball into the cage off passes from senior midfielders Audrey Sawers and Anna Steps to put in her second career game-winning goal for the Leopards. The Den Bosch, Netherlands native also delivered a goal in overtime in the Leopards' 2-1 win over Richmond on Sept. 15, 2019.

More importantly, Hefting's game-winner put the Leopards at 1-2 on the year. The Leopards have had 15 straight seasons earning at least one win their first three Patriot League contests.

"It was a hard fought team win today," Lafayette head coach Jennifer Stone said. "I thought our defense was solid for the majority of the day. Our OT group is a fantastic group of competitors and leaders. They performed and got us an important victory. Today was a team performance, and we are looking forward to taking another step as a group as we prepare for next weekend."

The Leopards earned the crucial victory  — their third straight win over Holy Cross and eighth win in their last 11 meetings against the Crusaders — by being on the offensive in the second half.

After a scoreless first half, the Leopards got on the scoreboard first four minutes into the third period after Sawers brought the ball into the circle and beat Holy Cross goalie Emma Skumurski near the post for the goal. However, Holy Cross tied it up four minutes later on a goal from Rachel Perry.

In the fourth period, the Maroon and White attacked the goal, taking five of their 10 shots in the game in the final frame. Sawers took two of those shots, one of which was blocked with 25 seconds left during a penalty corner. Tara Hamilton and Molly McAndrew each had a shot saved by Skumurski, while Sophie Carr had a shot go wide during the period.

In the extra session, the Leopards and Crusaders exchanged two shots apiece. Lafayette goalie Hailey Abbott saved the first shot of the period, denying a goal from Kristen Weber to keep the game tied up.

McAndrew had a shot go wide in the period before Hefting came through with her heroics.

The Leopards will return home and host their final regular season game of the season next Sunday when they take on defending Patriot League champion American in a 2 p.m. clash — the first of two rematches of last year's conference title game.
