HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Lafayette volleyball team fell to the Colgate Raiders on Sunday, 3-0.
The Leopards were led by junior
Leanna Deegan who totaled a team-high 15 kills. Junior
Madi Wahrmund totaled seven and freshman
Gracie Gibson totaled five. Freshman
Katie Weston led the way in digs with a team-high 12.
Colgate (7-1) took a quick 2-0 lead in the first set before the Leopards (2-5) got on the board off a kill by senior
Jenna Bailey. The two squads then traded points until, with the score tied at 10-10, the Raiders went on a four-point rally to take a 15-11 lead. From there they pushed out the lead to 21-15 and would go on to take the first set 25-17.
The Leopards took a 3-2 lead early in the second set off two Raider errors and a kill by Deegan. Colgate came back to take a 9-7 lead before the two sides traded kills and errors to bring the score to 10-10 once again.
The two sides battled back and forth until the Raiders pushed out the lead to 23-16. A kill by sophomore
Grace Steurer and a service ace by freshman
Alyssa Vitale brought the Leopards back within five but the Raiders were able to get the final two points in the set that they needed to win the second set and go up 2-0 in the match.
Warhmund got the Leopards on the board first in the third set on a kill off an assist from Vitale. Colgate responded with a three-point rally to then take a 3-1 lead. The two sides once again traded points until with the score tied at 13, Colgate used another three-point rally to pull ahead 16-13 and eventually out to 22-19.
The Leopards tried to stage a comeback, going on a three-point rally to pull within one of the Raiders, 23-22. But Colgate was able to get the final two points of the set, off back-to-back kills to secure the 25-22 set three victory and win the match 3-0. Â
Lafayette is set to close out its 2021 spring season with a home-and-home series with Army next weekend. Friday's match is set to take place in West Point, New York, and Sunday is slated for a 2 p.m. start in Easton.
