Leopards Fall to Lehigh in Doubleheader Saturday

Lafayette now sits at 3-2 in Patriot League action

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette baseball team dropped both games on Saturday at Kamine to Lehigh by a 1-4 final in game one of the doubleheader and a final of 4-1 in game one of the doubleheader and 3-8 in game two of the doubleheader.
 
In game one, junior Justin Johnson, junior Zach Savage and sophomore Kyle Chmielewski all totaled one hit. Starting pitcher Jordan Yoder went 6 innings, striking out five and walking two.
 
Game two saw Johnson, senior Colin Hartey and sophomore Pete Ciuffreda each totaling two hits each and Ciuffreda, sophomore Kyle Chmielewski and senior Ethan Stern each driving in a run. Starting pitcher Jacob Ciccone went 3.0 innings, striking out two.
 
In game one, Lehigh (7-6, 4-1 PL) got on the board first in the top of the second, off a sacrifice fly out to centerfield to bring home a Mountain Hawk runner and make it 1-0. From there, neither squad got a run across the plate until Lehigh hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to make it 3-0 before adding another to bring the score to 4-0.
 
Lafayette (4-4, 3-2 PL) was able to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh after junior Dylan Minghini drew a walk followed by a single by Hartey to put runners on first and second. Savage singled to load the bases for Chmielewski, who singled to bring Minghini home and make it 4-1, Lehigh, with one out. But two quick outs by the Mountain Hawks gave them the 4-1, game one win.
 
Game two saw Lehigh getting two quick runs in the top of the first, before Lafayette was able to get on the board in the bottom of the second after Hartey started off the bottom of the inning with a double to put himself in scoring position. After Savage flew out to left field, Chmielewski singled to bring Hartey home and bring the score to 2-1.
 
Lehigh exploded in the top of the third, starting off the inning with back-to-back solo home runs to bring the score to 4-1 and then added another, to make it 5-1 in the top of the third.
 
Stern hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the third, bringing home freshman Justin Grech to cut the Mountain Hawks lead to three. Ciuffreda then hit one out to the right fielder and Minghini grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.
 
The Mountain Hawks added two more in the top of the fourth and the Leopards added one more in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 7-3, heading into the sixth inning.
 
Lehigh added one more run in the top of the ninth to make it 8-2. Lafayette got one runner on base after sophomore Patrick Vandenbergh reached first on an error by the Mountain Hawks shortstop, but the Leopards were not able to the runner across the plate and fell to Lehigh in the second game of the doubleheader by an 8-3 final.
 
Up next for the Leopards is a doubleheader Sunday at Lehigh to close out the four-game series. First pitch of game one is slated for 12 p.m.
