EASTON, Pa. – The signs of progress continued for the Lafayette men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon at Fisher Stadium in a 13-9 defeat to Boston U.
Â
Lafayette, coming off a tough 24-8 defeat to Drexel on Wednesday, came out with a renewed energy, scoring the game's first two goals from freshman
Charlie Cunniffe and sophomore
Macklin Fitzpatrick. Boston U. answered with a five-goal run that helped the Terriers to a 6-3 halftime advantage, but two of the first three in the third went the Leopards' way to trim it to a 7-5 margin.
Â
Another Boston U. run late in the third seemed to put it away before a four-goal answer from the Maroon and White cut it to 11-9 with 7:34 left. Unfortunately, the ball bounced the visitors' way over the final stretch as the clock ran out on a 13-9 final.
Â
The Leopards were strong in all phases on the day with Cunniffe and classmate
Peter Lehman each scoring twice. Cunniffe and sophomore
Ian McCauley posted a pair of assists each, as well.
Â
Between the pipes, junior
Ryan Ness was excellent, making 15 saves on the day, including a couple right at the doorstep. Finally, sophomore
James Turco had his best performance of the season at the X, winning 15-of-26 faceoffs.
Â
Shots finished at 40-38 in Lafayette's favor and the Maroon and White won the ground ball battle as well, 42-37. The Leopards failed to convert on a pair of extra-man opportunities, but did not commit a penalty of their own.
Â
Next up for Lafayette is a trip to Worcester, Mass. on Sunday for a meeting with Holy Cross at 1 p.m.
