Stephens Surpasses 1,000 Points, But Leopards Fall In PLT

Sr. guard becomes 47th in program history to reach milestone

EASTON, Pa. – Senior E.J. Stephens eclipsed the 1,000-point mark and senior Justin Jaworski poured in 28 points, but the 2020-21 Lafayette men's basketball season came to an abrupt end on Saturday afternoon after the third-seeded Leopards lost to sixth-seeded Bucknell, 92-84, in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals at Kirby Sports Center.

Stephens, who scored 22 points in the game, became the program's 47th player to score more than 1,000 for his career. The Plantation, Fla. native ran his scoring total to 1,017 points and ended this season as an All-Patriot League Second-Team honoree.

Jaworski's 28 points allowed him to run his career scoring total with the Maroon and White to 1,484 points, good for 10th all-time in Lafayette history. The Schwenksville, Pa. native also finished this season as an All-Patriot League First-Team selection and two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The Leopards also had double-digit scoring outings from Leo O'Boyle and Neal Quinn, who scored 11 points apiece.

The Leopards had the better of the Bison in the regular-season meetings, routing them Bison (5-6) in Lewisburg on Jan. 9, 83-60, before winning a tightly-contested affair in Easton on Jan. 10, 87-76.

Lafayette jumped out to a fast start in the first five minutes in their third meeting with the Bison. After both teams exchanged two baskets apiece, the Leopards took a 15-8 lead following an 11-4 run that featured a pair of three-pointers from Jaworski and O'Boyle and an and-one from Neil Quinn on a driving layup.

The Maroon and White increased their advantage to nine over the next four minutes after Stephens took it to the rack, got a layup to go down while getting fouled and converted the free throw to make it 24-15. Then, Stephens etched his name into Lafayette history by scoring his 1,000th point on a layup on a quick move to the basket to make it 30-24 with 8:41 left in the half.

The Bison made their way back into it by cutting the Leopards' lead to four with over seven minutes left. Jaworski got the Leopards' advantage to 32-26 after nailing a jumper, but the lead ended up being erased after Bucknell went on an 11-0 run to put the Leopards down 37-32 with 5:07 remaining in the half.

Quinn stopped the Bison's run after making a jumper and the ensuing free throw following a Bucknell foul. However, the Bison went on a 9-2 run to take a 46-37 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Leopards saw Bucknell push the lead to 15 in the first minute-and-a-half, but Stephens helped them cut it down to 10 at the 15:45 mark after making a three and a layup. The Leopards battled back-and-forth with the Bison over the next eight minutes and managed to cut the lead to seven following a Jaworski three to make it 67-60 Bucknell.

Then with under three minutes left, the Leopards started to make a rally by going on a 7-3 run after Stephens made four free throws and Jaworski knocked down a three to make it 80-76 Bucknell. The Bison answered with a jump shot to push the lead back to six.

Stephens and Jaworski cut the Bison's lead to four on two more occasions, but Bucknell converted 10-of-12 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the win.

The Leopards finished the season as the Patriot League's Central Division champions after going 5-1 in a division that featured Bucknell and Lehigh.
