Softball Finishes Road Series at Colgate

Harvey, Grover highlight Leopards in Saturday’s defeats

HAMILTON, N.Y. — The Lafayette softball team wrapped up a road Patriot League series against Colgate on Saturday afternoon, dropping 1-0 and 7-5 decisions to the Raiders at Eaton Street Field.

Coming off a 2-0 win at Colgate on Friday, Lafayette held the Raiders to only five hits in Saturday's opener, but one of them brought in the game's lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a single to right field.

In the nightcap, the Leopards jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to the big bats of Julia Romano and Paige Grover. Romano hit a solo home run and Grover followed with a two-run homer that scored her and Grace Harvey, who doubled earlier in the inning.

However, the Raiders scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and put up six more runs in the second inning to take a 7-3 lead on the Leopards.

Lafayette cut the deficit to three in the fifth inning after Harvey hit a double and Morgan Olynyk scored before Harvey was thrown out at third during a rundown to end the inning.

After a scoreless sixth, the Leopards trimmed Colgate's lead to 7-5 in the seventh on a RBI-single from Harvey that brought in Natasha Miner, who singled earlier in the inning. They could not complete the comeback against the Raiders.

Harvey led the Leopards at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI in game two and 1-for-3 in game one. Grover added a hit in game one to go with her two-run shot in game two.

With their performances at the plate, Harvey and Grover are both batting over .400 this season -- Harvey at .406 average and Grover right at .400.

Romano and Miner both went 2-for-4 in game two, while Julia Roman led the Leopards at the plate in the first game by going 2-for-3.

The Leopards received a quality start in the first game from Hannah Cook, who threw a complete game, induced nine flyouts and eight ground outs and struck out one in the defeat.

The Leopards will return home to host Holy Cross in a four-game series next Saturday and Sunday at Metzgar Fields.
