Cunningham Posts Historic Performance in Loss at Army

Women's lacrosse junior scored seven goals in the 18-11 defeat

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Junior Olivia Cunningham of the Lafayette women's lacrosse posted a historic day for the Maroon and White on Saturday afternoon in West Point, N.Y., scoring seven times in the Leopards' 18-11 defeat at the hands of Army.

Cunningham's seven-goal performance is the highest scoring output for a Leopard in more than five years. Jane Kirby '18 netted eight with an assist in a 20-9 victory over American on April 1, 2017. Two of those seven were assisted by senior co-captain Anna Stein, who posted a team-high four assists on the afternoon.

Unfortunately for the Maroon and White, that offensive output wasn't complemented on the defensive side as the Leopards fell to 0-5 on the season and Army improved to 3-3.

The Black Knights jumped on the front foot from the get-go, scoring the game's first seven goals to put the Leopards in a significant hole before Sarah Bennett's opening score stopped the streak. Bennett's goal swung momentum back Lafayette's way, though, as the Maroon and White scored five of the next six to work back into it, trailing 8-5 with 6:37 to play in the half.

Army closed the opening half with three of the final four scores and kept inching out their advantage throughout the second half. The Leopards never got closer than a four-goal margin in the second stanza as the clock ran out on an 18-11 final.

Senior co-captain Quinn Lacy did all she could between the pipes with 14 saves, moving her within six of the 400 mark for her career. Bennett scored twice to accompany Cunningham's seven, while freshman Clare Culligan and sophomore Meghan McLachlan each added one.

The Leopards return home in their next contest for Senior Day on Saturday at 4 p.m., hosting Lehigh.
