Field Hockey drops 2nd double-OT game to American

Leopards play tough vs. defending champs in season finale

WASHINGTON — The Lafayette field hockey team went toe-to-toe with defending Patriot League champion American for the second time in two weeks, but it wound up dropping a 3-2 double-overtime game to the Eagles in its season finale on Sunday afternoon.

The Leopards (1-5) were looking to top American (4-1) this time after losing a hard-fought 2-1 double-overtime to the Eagles in their first matchup at Rappolt Field. They got down by a goal in the first five minutes of the game, but managed to get the equalizer from senior Grace Angelella with 16 seconds left in the period after the midfielder scored off a pass from fellow classmate Audrey Sawers.

In the second period, American went up, 2-1, in the first two minutes  after scoring off a rebound following a save from Lafayette goalie Haily Abbott. The Eagles took that lead into halftime.

In the third period, Sawers scored her Patriot League-leading fourth goal of the season on a double assist from Anna Steps and Sophie Carr during a penalty corner to tie the game at 2. Sawers finished the season as the Patriot League's leader in goals and tied for first in the conference in points with 10.

In the fourth quarter, the Leopards managed to outshoot the Eagles, 6-5, in the period, with Sawers having two shots, Felicitas Hannes taking two shots, and Molly McAndrew and Alix Talkow each taking one. Unfortunately, both of Sawers' shots were blocked, Hannes' first shot was saved by American's goalie Bryn Underwood and her second was blocked, Talkow's was saved by Underwood, and McAndrew's shot went wide, resulting in the game going to overtime.

After the two teams couldn't come away with a goal in the first overtime, Lafayette had three shots at the goal in the second extra period, with McAndrew taking two stabs at the goalie and Sawers taking one shot. Sawers came the closest to scoring, as her shot came on a penalty corner, but it was saved by Underwood.

One minute later following Sawers' shot, American put in the game-winning goal after Noor Coenen scored on a penalty stroke.
