HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Lafayette College women's tennis (3-5, 1-3 PL) picked up a boost from its fifth and sixth flights in singles, but couldn't keep up with Colgate (4-4, 2-3 PL) in a 5-2 loss on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Melanie Sparhawk stormed to her third straight-sets win of the season in fifth-flight singles, taking down junior Nicole Condas, 6-4, 6-3.
Jessica Siegel also continued a strong second season with the Leopards by earning her team-high fifth singles win of the year. The Boca Raton, Fla. native, who was the Patriot League Women's Tennis Player of the Week earlier this year after a double-bagel win over Holy Cross, took the sixth-flight match against Colgate's Callie Bartimer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Colgate used a strong start by earning the doubles point and earned crucial wins at the first four singles flights.
Playing just her second match this year at first-flight singles for the Leopards, junior Maureen McCormack battled back from a set down to force a decider thanks to a 6-4 second-set win. She would fall in that final set against Emme Levenson, 6-4.
Sophomore Halle DeNardo also had a battle at third singles, following up a close 7-5 first set loss with a 6-3 win in the second set. She would fall in the decider to Colgate's Katerina Atallah, 6-2.
Lafayette hosts The Rivalry next weekend. The match against Lehigh gets started Saturday at 4 p.m.
