Army Takes Mid-Week Doubleheader From Leopards

Lehigh up next on softball slate

EASTON, Pa. – Army took both halves of a Patriot League mid-week doubleheader vs. the Leopards on Thursday night, winning 9-0 and 4-1 at Metzgar Fields.

Game one was a pitcher's duel through four innings with Lafayette starter Kailee Sawai (7 IP, 3K) and Army starter Jolie Duong holding the opposing offenses in check. Army drew first blood in the fifth inning, scoring a pair of runs on two hits and the aid of a Leopard error. Ally Snelling and Duong each drove in runs.

The Black Knights broke open the game with four runs on five hits in the sixth inning. Defensively, the inning was highlighted by Julia Roman's diving catch in deep leftfield that saved a run. Army added three more runs in the seventh for the 9-0 final.

Duong held the Leopards to two hits in the game, a Paige Sandidge single in the third inning and a Paige Grover lead-off single in the seventh. Duong (8-1) struck out eight Leopard batters and walked one in the circle win.

The scoring came much sooner for both teams in game two as Army and Lafayette each plated run in the second. The Leopards gave up three hits, two in the infield, as Army led 1-0. In the bottom of the inning, Roman's one-out double down the right field line scored Morgan Olynyk from first base to knot the score at 1-1.

Army re-took the lead, 2-1, in the top of the fourth, scoring the go-ahead run on three singles. In the fifth, Army added another run as Kayla Edwards reached on a lead-off double and scored on a Madi Gilmore double. Two errors led to an insurance run for the visitors in the fifth.

Lafayette managed three hits in the game, two in the second, and a Grover lead-off single to start the seventh against Army pitcher Emily Iannotti. Hannah Cook was the pitcher of record for Lafayette, allowing three earned runs on nine hits.

The Maroon and White return to action on Saturday, hosting Lehigh in a doubleheader beginning at noon. Prior to game one, Lafayette seniors Cook, Grover and Kaitlyn Rarick will be honored as part of Senior Day.
