Field Hockey Opens Patriot League Play with a Loss

American scores a lone goal in OT

WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Lafayette field hockey team went toe-to-toe with 2019 Patriot League champion and rival American Saturday morning, but it wound up dropping a 1-0 overtime game to the Eagles. The Leopards now have an overall record of 5-2, 0-1 PL.

The Leopards came out strong in the attacking twenty-five, outshooting American 16-8 and holding a slight advantage in corners (9-7). Audrey Sawers, Molly McAndrew and Felicitas Hannes all had numerous shots for the Maroon and White today.

Senior captain Sawers also had a penalty stroke attempt in the third quarter (34:27) that could not be converted.

Lafayette's senior goalkeeper Hailey Abbott made a total of two saves in her 70 minutes of action, compared to 10 by American's sophomore goalkeeper Bryn Underwood.

American put in the game-winning goal (62:20) after Noor Coenen was assisted by Georgia Davies off the corner feed.

Lafayette returns home to Rappolt Field on Sept. 25 for a 3:30 p.m. contest against Patriot League opponent, Holy Cross. The Crusaders are currently 2-3, after losing to Bucknell this morning.
