EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette College women's basketball program fell to Army, 62-56, Saturday afternoon in its first Patriot League loss of the season.
The Leopards were led by four in double figures. Leading the way was junior
Jessica Booth with 16 points followed by senior
Naomi Ganpo and freshman
Claire Gallagher each with 11, and sophomore
Makayla Andrews with 10.
Ganpo added a team-high nine rebounds to go with her 11 points while Booth led the team in assists and steals with four each.
Army (8-6, 3-2 PL) got on the board first at the 9:35 mark before Andrews put Lafayette (7-7, 3-1 PL) on the board to tie up the game 2-2.
The Leopards then went on a 3-0 scoring run to put themselves up 5-2 before Army responded with a three-point shot to tie the game up at five.
Booth then added back-to-back buckets for the Leopards to put the Maroon and White in the lead by four, but the Black Knights responded with an 8-0 run to retake the lead and send the game into the second quarter with the score 16-13.
Sophomore
Kayla Drummond came out at the start of the second quarter with a jumper to pull Lafayette within a point. Gallagher followed-up Drummonds basket with a three-pointer of her own to put Lafayette back in the lead 17-16. Andrews then put in a basket of her own to put Lafayette ahead by three.
Army battled back to pull themselves with one, 22-21, a few minutes later in the quarter but Booth responded with a layup to pull Lafayette back in the lead. Army then put in a layup to pull the scoring margin back to one.
Gallagher pushed the Leopards lead out to four with a shot from beyond the arc before Army retook the lead, 28-27, off a jumper and a three-pointer of its own. Each squad put in two more buckets to send the game into halftime with Army leading 32-31.
Army opened up the second half with a 5-0 run to put the score at 37-31. Gallagher then drained a shot from beyond the arc to try to spark the Leopards offense and pulling them back within three.
Army then went on another scoring run to put themselves ahead 41-34, and from there ran away with the quarter to send the game into the final 10 minutes of action with the score 49-42 in favor of the Black Knights.
The Leopards made a layup to start the fourth quarter, looking to get the offense going. Ganpo then put in a bucket to pull Lafayette back within three, 49-46.
Army responded with another shot from beyond the arc to put the score at 52-46 and then from there, ran away with the game to take a 62-56 victory back to West Point.
The Black Knights were led by Alisa Fallon who led all players with a game-high 22 points. Lauren Lithgow was the other Black Knight to find herself in double figures with 11.
Up next for the Maroon and White is a trip to Holy Cross on Wednesday before returning to
Kirby Sports Center on Saturday to take on Colgate. Wednesday's game is slated for a 6 p.m. tip and Saturdays is slated for a 2 p.m. tip.
