Women's Basketball Beats Navy to Stay Perfect in League Play

Four Leopards recorded double-digit points in the win over Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lafayette College women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon with a 54-44 win over Navy in Annapolis.
 
The Leopards were led by four in double figures with junior Jessica Booth and sophomore Makayla Andrews each totaling 14 points and seniors Naomi Ganpo and Nicole Johnson each recording 10.  
 
Senior Makaila Wilson led the way in rebounds for the Maroon and White with 11 while Ganpo added a team-high five blocks to her stat line and Wilson added a team-high four assists to hers.
 
Lafayette (6-6, 2-0 PL) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead off free throws by Booth and back-to-back jumpers by Wilson. Navy (4-10, 1-3 PL) got on the board at the 8:48 mark to bring the score to 6-2.  
 
Ganpo added a layup to put Lafayette ahead by six before Navy started to chip away and put themselves ahead by one, 9-8. Wilson then put in a layup with just over two minutes to play in the quarter put the Leopards back out in front 10-9. Booth followed up Wilson's layup with back-to-back baskets to put Lafayette ahead, 14-9, at the end of the first quarter.  
 
The Leopards started off the second quarter on a 4-0 run to go up 18-9 before the media timeout of the quarter was called. The Midshipmen eventually broke through the Leopards defense and put in a basket with 7:48 left to play in the quarter. They then battled back to within a point of Lafayette to put the score at 18-17.
 
Andrews put in a layup with 3:48 left to play in the half putting Lafayette ahead by three, 20-17, before Navy went on an 8-0 run to take a 24-20 lead heading into halftime.  
 
Lafayette pulled within a bucket at the start of the third quarter but Navy responded with a bucket of its own to push the lead back out to four. Ganpo answered Navy's bucket with back-to-back buckets to tie up the game at 26 before it was Johnson who broke the tie to put the Leopards on top 28-26.
 
Navy retook the lead 30-28 with 5:35 left to play in the third quarter, but Booth made a jumper to once again tie up the game and then it was Johnson again who broke the tie off a three-pointer to put Lafayette ahead by 33-30.
 
The two sides traded buckets to send the game into the final 10 minutes tied at 35.
 
Andrews started off the final quarter for Lafayette with a jumper and drew an and-one, making her extra shot to put Lafayette up by three. Navy then put in a basket to pull themselves within one, 38-37. Ganpo and Wilson put in back-to-back buckets to put Lafayette on a 4-0 run and give them a five point lead, and from there the Leopards cruised to a 10 point victory in Annapolis Saturday afternoon.

The win marks the first time the program has opened up league play 2-0 since the 1993-94 season. 
 
Lafayette will return home on Wednesday to play in Kirby Sports Center for the first time since December 4. The Leopards are set to welcome Loyola for a 6 p.m. tip.
