Leopards' Rally Falls Short On Senior Day

Holmes, Steward and Sutton all score TDs for Maroon and White

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette's comeback from a 17-point, first-half deficit came up short on Senior Day as Georgetown notched a 30-20 final on Saturday afternoon at Fisher Stadium.

Freshmen Elijah Steward and Dallas Holmes each reeled in touchdown passes, one apiece from Ah-Shaun Davis and Rent Montie, respectively, and senior Jaden Sutton ran in another for the Leopard offense which out-gained Georgetown 307-296.

Defensively, Saiku White and Preston Forney made nine stops apiece with Semaj Cross adding seven tackles, including his first career sack.

The visitors seized the momentum early in the game, scoring seven minutes in. The Hoyas put together a 14-play, 77-yard drive that was capped by a 15-yard pass from Pierce Holley to Joshua Tomas. Georgetown picked up a pair of first downs on the drive.

Just into the second quarter, the Leopards ran a fake punt on 4th-and-12 at their own 18-yard line. The snap went directly to Marco Olivas who was stopped for no gain. On the resulting possession, the Lafayette defense had Georgetown 3rd-and-goal at the eight-yard line. Holley's pass was incomplete but the Leopards were whistled for pass interference. Two plays later Joshua Stakely plunged in from two yards out for the 14-0 lead.

Georgetown added a field goal with 5:34 left in the half set up by a Holley to Tomas 51-yard connection that pushed the score to 17-0.

The Leopards changed the momentum with three minutes left in the half. Senior DL Malik Hamm drilled Holley and forced a fumble that Olivas scooped up and returned nine yards.

The Leopards' subsequent drive netted seven points. On 1st-and-10 at the 21, Davis used a QB draw to go for 13 yards down to the Georgetown eight-yard line. Two plays later, Davis rolled out toward the visitor sideline and found Steward for a five-yard TD, his second score of the season. Lafayette trailed 17-7 at intermission.

On the second possession of the second half, Lafayette cut the deficit to 17-14. Davis (7-15-1, 71 yards, TD) hit Chris Carasia for a 46-yard strike down the Leopard sideline. Two runs by Sutton, the second for two yards, put the Leopards in for the touchdown at 10:38.

With 3:36 left in the third quarter, Georgetown used a turnover to extend its lead to 24-14. Cadet Wedner picked off Davis and returned it 26 yards to the three-yard line. Herman Moultrie did the rest of the work, scoring on a three-yard run for a 10-point advantage.

With 11 minutes left, Georgetown put away the game. After a punt, the Hoyas started at midfield and Holley immediately hooked up with Jimmy Kibble for a 49-yard TD.

The Leopards weren't quite done, however. Montie (6-11-0, 145 yards, TD) checked into the game under center, looking to spark the team. He zipped a pass to Holmes for 30 yards and then followed with another offering to Steward who made a couple of moves and picked up 39 yards to the Georgetown 16-yard line. Steward finished the game with four catches for 81 yards.

On 4th-and-goal at the Georgetown two-yard line, Montie eluded pressure and found a leaping Holmes in the end zone for his first career touchdown. The Leopards went for two, with Montie throwing to junior TE Mason Gilbert in the interior of the line, but the play was stopped just short of the goal line. Lafayette trailed 30-20.

The Leopards tried an on-sides kick which Georgetown recovered at midfield. The defense stopped the Hoyas at the Leopard 29-yard line and took over on downs with 4:13 left on the clock.

The Leopards drove to the Georgetown 31, but could not inch any closer on the scoreboard.

Lafayette will take to the road for a pair of games, venturing to Colgate on Nov. 5 and Fordham on Nov. 12 before returning home to host Lehigh in the 158th Meeting of college football's most-played rivalry on Nov. 19.

Notes: Hamm's sack gives him 31 for his career, moving him past Georgetown's Andrew Schaetzke '12 (30.5) for fourth place on the Patriot League career sacks list.
