HAMILTON, N.Y. – Lafayette could not quite match the offensive output of first-place Colgate on Monday night as the Raiders pulled away in the final minutes of a 69-61 final.
The Leopards were held to three baskets in the final six minutes while leading scorer junior forward
Neal Quinn (8 points) saw his double-figure scoring streak snapped at 17 games. Lafayette's second-half perimeter shooting was nearly as chilly as the single-digit temperature in Hamilton, as the Leopards were 1-of-11 from long distance.
C.J. Fulton continued to make a significant impact as a rookie, leading the team with 11 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists. Junior
Kyle Jenkins chipped with eight points, six rebounds and a career-high six assists while
Tyrone Perry (9) and
Jon Brantley (8) combined for 17 points.
Colgate out-rebounded the Leopards 38-26, parlaying that advantage into a 13-2 margin in second-chance points. The hosts shot 53 percent from the floor for the game.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair characterized by hot shooting from both squads. Jenkins and Brantley had eight points apiece, each with a pair of three's that pushed Lafayette to 50 percent from the floor.
Quinn was scoreless until the final minute of the half when his layup put the halftime score at 38-36 in favor of the hosts. Colgate shot 53 percent from the floor as four of the Raiders' starting five had eight or more points in the opening half.
After the intermission, Quinn's feed to a cutting Fulton snapped an 8-0 Colgate spurt three and a half minutes in. Quinn helped Lafayette cut the deficit to two points on a layup at 13:54, and then Fulton's fast-breakup bucket two possessions later saw Lafayette trailing 50-48 at 12:40.
With 6:25 left in the game, Lafayette took its first free throw of the contest when
Leo O'Boyle was fouled on a made layup. That brought Lafayette within five (62-57). The Leopards offense then shot 2-for-7 down the stretch as the Raiders salted away the game thanks to a pair of timely buckets from Keegan Records who finished with a game-high 21 points.
Lafayette will next host Loyola on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
