Brasher Plates Two in 6-4 win over Merrimack

Van Wyk collects fourth pitching victory of the season

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Junior Erica Brasher delivered a two-run single in the fifth inning to propel Lafayette past Merrimack on Sunday afternoon. Kinzi Van Wyk continued a strong start to her senior, pitching a complete game to capture her fourth win of the season.

After spotting Merrimack a pair of runs in the first inning, Lafayette took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the second inning. The Leopards managed just one hit in the inning but scored four runs – two runs scoring on an error and two more came in when Grace Harvey and Julia Roman drew bases-loaded walks.

Merrimack knotted the game at 4-4 with solitary runs in the third and fourth inning.

The Leopards took the lead for good in the fifth. With two outs in the inning, sophomore Bella Lowdermilk, Van Wyk and junior Julia Roman each drew walks to load the bases and keep the inning alive. That set the stage for Brasher who went the opposite way to left field to score a pair of runs.

Van Wyk did the rest of the work, retiring six batters over the final two innings to seal the win. She allowed two earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts in the game.

The Leopards will have Monday off from game action before wrapping the Florida swing on Tuesday with a doubleheader vs. Niagara at 11 a.m.
