WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Lafayette College women's basketball team dropped its final game of the regular season to American University, 62-48, in Bender Arena.
The Leopards were led by senior
Naomi Ganpo who recorded a double double with 10 points and a career-high 20 rebounds. Freshman
Abby Antognoli and junior
Jessica Booth were the two other Leopards to record double digit points with each totaling 10 as well.
Ganpo added a team-leading two blocks while Booth added a team-high four assists.
Lafayette (11-17, 7-11 PL) got on the board first less than a minute into the game off a layup by Ganpo. American (20-8, 12-5 PL) responded right away with a jumper to tie the game up at the 9:18 mark. The two sides than traded buckets to put the score at 4-4.
Ganpo drew a foul and went to the line for two, making both her extra shots to give Lafayette a 6-4 lead. American tied up the game 6-6 before Ganpo then made another shot from the charity stripe to put Lafayette back in the lead 7-6.
The two sides continued to trade buckets until with 1:33 left to play in the first quarter, the Eagles made a layup with one second left on the clock to take a 12-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
American dominated the second quarter, outscoring Lafayette 15-4, to take a 27-15 lead at the half.
The Maroon and White opened up the third quarter with a 10-0 run to pull within a bucket of the Eagles putting the score at 27-25. Both sides traded buckets to keep the scoring gap to a basket until with 6:00 left to play in the third quarter, American put in a shot from beyond the arc to take a 32-27 lead.
Lafayette started to chip away at American's lead pulling within four points, 35-31, with 3:50 left to play. The Eagles than added four-straight points to put the score at 39-31 before taking a 44-38 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Eagles puts in the first two buckets of the second quarter to take a 10 point lead. The two sides traded buckets to keep the scoring gap to 10 with 6:47 left to play in the quarter before Lafayette went on a 6-0 run to pull within four points. The two squads than traded layups to put the score at 52-48.
The Eagles scored the last 10 points of the game to earn the 62-48 victory Wednesday night.
The home team was led by Emily Johns who totaled a game-high 19 points. Two other Eagles, Emily Fisher and Jade Edwards each also totaled double digit points, recording 14 and 13, respectively. Edwards also totaled 10 rebounds for a double double.
The Leopards now turn their attention to the Patriot League Tournament. They will enter the tournament at the seventh seed and are set to host No. 10 Loyola Maryland on Saturday in Kirby Sports Center at 2 p.m.
