FAIRFAX, Va. – Lafayette softball dropped a one-run decision in Saturday's second game, as George Mason pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-4 final.
Â
Lafayette took a 4-3 lead into that decisive final inning. The Leopards produced all of their offense in the visitor sixth when
Paige Sandidge, batting with two outs in the inning, delivered her first career grand slam.
Â
They carried that lead in to the seventh inning. Leopard starter
Jacqueline Cal retired the first batter of the inning before giving up a pair of singles. Cal got the second out of the inning on a pop up to shortstop, but runners remained at second and third. The next batter, Maddy Myers, slapped a single to score two runs and put the final at 5-4. Â
Â
Leopard freshman
Kaya Ciccone-Cozart had a pair of hits in a 2-for-3 day after the start at first base, while fellow rookie
Harlie Bickett added a single and a walk with a run scored. Â
Â
Cal threw 6.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout. Cheyenne Van Pelt collected the win, tossing the final 1.1 innings and faced five batters.
The teams will be back at it on Sunday, closing out the series with a doubleheader beginning at noon.Â
