PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Lafayette College baseball team fell to No. 22 Rutgers University 23-3 Tuesday in a nonconference contest.

The Leopards were led by freshman
Kaleb Willis who went 2-for-3 with a home run and junior
Kyle Chmielewski who went 1-for-4 with a home run. Starting pitcher junior
Kyle Subers went 1.2 innings.

Willis' home run was his first collegiate home run while Chmielewski's was his third of the season.

Lafayette (11-24, 6-5 PL) struck first in the top of the first inning after Willis hit a solo home run to give Lafayette the early lead.

Rutgers (26-6, 8-1 Big 10) responded with a grand slam in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead and then added four runs in the second, five runs in the third, and two runs in the fourth to put the score at 15-1 heading into the fifth inning.

The Leopards plated another run in the top of the fifth off a home run by Chmielewski to put the score at 15-2. Â

The Scarlet Knights exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth and one run in the seventh to bring the score to 23-2. The Lafayette Nine added one more run in the top of the eighth, off an RBI single by freshman
Carter Dorighi, bringing the final to 23-3.

Lafayette returns to Patriot League action on Saturday as the Leopards welcome Army to Easton for a doubleheader. Saturday's first pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
