PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Lafayette College baseball team fell to Villanova in the semifinals of the Liberty Bell Classic on Tuesday afternoon, 4-0.
Lafayette (10-21, 5-3 PL) was led by sophomore
Michael Mallas who went 1-for-2 with a double and senior
Evan Kiah who went 1-for-3. Starting pitcher freshman
Joe Skapinetz went 4.0 innings striking out two. Sophomore
Joe Pence and freshman
Chase Barley each came in for two innings of relief.
Villanova (9-15-1, 1-2 Big East) plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead and then added one more in the bottom of the eighth to put the score at 4-0.
The Leopards best chance of the day to plate runs come in the eighth after Kiah singled to start the top of the inning. Two batters later, Mallas was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Sophomore
Justin Grech then flied out to center field and Kiah advanced to third on the throw to set up the Leopards first run of the day. Freshman
Easton Brenner flew out to center field to end the inning and leave the runners on base.
The Wildcats got the Leopards in order of the top of the ninth to secure the shutout win.
Lafayette returns to Patriot League action on Saturday, traveling to Bucknell for a three-game series. The Leopards and Bison will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m., and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
