WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lafayette College baseball team fell to the Holy Cross Crusaders in both games of its Saturday doubleheader, dropping game one 4-2 and game two 5-2.
The Leopards were led in game one by sophomore
Justin Grech who went 1-for-1 with a solo home run and freshman
Easton Brenner who went 1-for-3 with one run. Starting pitcher sophomore
Luke Benneche went 5.1 innings striking out two.
Game two saw freshman
Michael Zarrillo and freshman
Kaleb Willis leading the way, going 1-for-3 and 1-for-4, respectively. Freshman
Carter Dorighi went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Starting pitcher junior
Jake Bloss went 5.1 innings, striking out seven.
In game one, Lafayette (15-33, 10-13 PL) got on the board first in the top of the first inning off Grech's solo home run. Holy Cross (16-34, 10-13 PL) responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning to send the game into the second inning tied 1-1.
The Crusaders added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
Lafayette added a run in the top of the fifth inning after an RBI ground out by junior
Pete Ciuffreda brought Brenner home to pull the Leopards within one.
The home team responded with one more run in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 4-2 game one victory.
Holy Cross took a 2-0 lead in the second game of the doubleheader in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI single. Lafayette responded in the top of the fifth with two runs of its own after Zarrillo came across home on a wild pitch and Willis scored on an RBI ground out by Dorighi.
The Crusaders added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to stretch the lead to three.
Both teams went down in order in the seventh inning and eighth inning, and the Leopards went down in order in the top of the ninth as the Crusaders secured the game two victory.
Lafayette is back in action Sunday for a doubleheader at Army. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
