Women’s Soccer Notches First Win of the Season

Sara Oswald, Gretchen Waechter and April McDonald all score goals

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette women's soccer team defeated the Peacocks of St. Peter's in a non-conference match this afternoon at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.

St. Peter's started the scoring in the 15th minute when Lucia Mansilla Medina's shot from point blank range went past Lafayette senior goalkeeper Natalie Neumann.

The Leopards responded 15 minutes later.  A shot by Michaela Salvati was blocked and ricocheted out to Lafayette sophomore Gretchen Waechter, who rocketed a shot into the middle of the net, equalizing the score 1-1.

The second half had barely begun, when in the 46th minute senior Sara Oswald sent a pass to freshman April McDonald who launched the ball into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal, giving the Leopards a 2-1 lead. In the 53rd minute, the Leopards added to their lead when Oswald received a pass from sophomore Alexa Jindal and placed a shot past St. Peter's goalkeeper Olivia Mackethan, staking the Leopards to a 3-1 advantage.

Lafayette finished the afternoon with 11 shots and St. Peter's recorded five. Both teams had four shots on goal. For the Leopards, Melissa Lamanna, Rory Schauder and Oswald all took two shots, with one of Oswald's shots resulting in a Lafayette goal. Waechter, Salvati, McDonald, Jindal and Anna Garcia took one shot each. Waechter and McDonald's shots resulted in goals for Lafayette.

Neumann started the game in goal for the Leopards and recorded two saves.  She was replaced for the second half by junior goalkeeper Lindsay Dewar.
