EASTON, Pa. -- Lafayette took home a pair of Patriot League Football football weekly honors as sophomore safety
Saiku White was selected as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and freshman
Ryan Schuster was tagged as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon.
White made a career-high and game-high 12 tackles to help the Leopards shut out two-time defending NEC champion Sacred Heart, 6-0, on Saturday. White came up with the game-clinching tackle short of the goal line on the game's final play, stuffing All-American running back Malik Grant as time expired. That run stop followed two pass incompletions on first and second down from the one-yard line.
The Leopard defense held Sacred Heart to just 56 rushing yards despite facing a 13-minute deficit in time of possession. White bolstered his player of the week credentials in the fourth quarter, stopping a Sacred Heart drive with a forced fumble near midfield.
Schuster scored the game-winning touchdown in the win. He started the game, finishing with 34 rushing yards, 18 of which came on a touchdown run in the third quarter for the only points of the game. Schuster's 22-yard scramble on 3rd-and-30 at the SHU 41-yard line kept the drive alive and he followed by converting a 3rd-and-17 with his scoring run.
Lafayette will travel to Temple for week two. The game, being played at the Philadelphia Eagles' Lincoln Financial Field, will kick off at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
