Leopards Sink the Midshipmen in Annapolis

Jenkins nets 19 against Navy in second-half comeback

ANNAPOLIS, Md.- The Lafayette men's basketball team earned back-to-back wins this week with a 59-50 victory against Navy on Wednesday evening in Alumni Hall.

Junior Kyle Jenkins led the Maroon and White with 19 points to go along with seven rebounds and two assists. The captain duo of Leo O'Boyle and CJ Fulton followed him with 13 and 9, respectively. The Leopards shot 40 percent from the floor and beyond the arc overall.

Freshman Josh Rivera opened the scoring for Lafayette with a dunk less than one minute into the game. The Midshipmen followed up with an 11-2 run to the 12-minute mark, 11-4.

O'Boyle ended the Leopard slump, knocking down a 3-pointer at 11:49, 11-7. Lafayette would make a 9-5 run to tie 16-16 at 7:47; Justin Vander Baan led the stretch with four points.

Jenkins' four free throws and a 3-pointer closed out the half with Navy leading by four, 31-27. The Higganum, Conn. native opened the second half with back-to-back jumpers to even the game at 18:47, 31-31.

Holding Navy scoreless down to the 16-minute mark, the Leopards made a 9-0 run, including a 3-pointer from Fulton to keep the lead, 36-31.

The Midshipmen crept within one at 13:04, 39-38, but did not see another advantage all evening. A five-point O'Boyle-only run kept Lafayette ahead by four, 44-40, at 8:07.

TJ Berger and Jenkins both sank a 3-pointers four minutes later, elevating the Maroon and White to a 52-42 lead.

Non-stop smart defense and two free throws each from Berger and O'Boyle with less than two minutes left to play led the Leopards to a second conference victory, 59-50, on the road.

Daniel Deaver led Navy with 15 points on the evening, as the Midshipmen shot 38.5 percent overall from the floor. Navy totaled a mere 21.1 percent from beyond the arc overall. Lafayette focused on limiting their opponent's outside shooting and did not allow the Midshipmen to net a 3-pointer during the entire second half.

The Leopards will host Holy Cross on Saturday with a 1 p.m. tip-off.
