EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette men's basketball team continued the 2023 conference slate with a 62-46 victory against Loyola Md. on Wednesday evening in Kirby Sports Center.
Lafayette shot 45.8 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from beyond the arc overall, leading wire-to-wire. Senior captain
Leo O'Boyle led the Maroon and White with 18 points, shooting 60 percent from the floor, and added three 3-pointers, three free throws and nine rebounds.
The Leopards took an early lead just five minutes into the game with freshman
Josh Rivera totaling eight points in the 10-5 advantage.
The Greyhounds kept in close contention until a 14-0 Leopard run from 6:40 gave the hosts a comfortable cushion to end the first half, 39-24. O'Boyle led the stretch with eight points on a pair of 3's and a pair of free throws, followed by
TJ Berger with four and
Kyle Jenkins with two (2:22).
The second half started off slow offensively, as both teams combined for three buckets by the 15-minute mark. Berger had the Leopards' lone 3-pointer at 16:38, 42-29.
A great hustle play by O'Boyle led to an easy fast-break layup by
CJ Fulton at 14:40, 44-29. Jenkins sank a 3-pointer under one minute later to extend the advantage to 18, 47-29, continuing the Maroon and White's largest lead of the game.
Loyola retaliated with the following three buckets, 47-36, at 11:52.
A 15-4 Leopard stretch down to the four-minute mark, 62-40, secured a fifth league win for Lafayette.
Justin Vander Baan recorded eight points and four free throws, followed by O'Boyle with five in the run.
The Leopard defense held Loyola to 46 points, the lowest for a Lafayette opponent this season. Lafayette out-rebounded Loyola 39-31.
Deon Perry and Kenneth Jones led the Greyhounds with 12 points each at the end of the evening, as Loyola came up with a sparse 22 points in the second half. The Greyhounds shot 32.7 percent from the floor overall and went 4-for-14 from the charity stripe.
The Leopards will travel to league-leading Colgate on Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m.
