EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette men's soccer team defeated Boston U. 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Gummeson Grounds: Home of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium. Sophomore
Nicholas Liebich and senior captain
Hale Lombard were the goal scorers on the day.
Prior to kickoff, the men's soccer program honored the 2003 Patriot League Championship team for its 20-year anniversary. Due to the team's accomplishments and its generous donations to the men's soccer program, the hillside behind the east goal at Gummeson Grounds is now named the 2003 Championship Hillside.
After the match commenced, both teams used the first five minutes to get adjusted to the field's conditions, as it was a rainy cold day in Easton, Pa.
The first 20 minutes of play resulted in many fouls for both sides. In the first half alone, the match featured 17 fouls, 10 of which the Terriers accumulated.
In the 34
th minute, Liebich broke the deadlock for the Maroon and White. Lombard heaved a long throw in into Boston's box. The ball pinballed around before Liebich's initial header soared straight up in the air. His second headed attempt was on target and looped over the Terriers' goalkeeper Francesco Montali. This was Liebich's first goal of his career as a Leopard.
Just five minutes later, Lombard doubled Lafayette's lead with a precise header. Junior defender
Connor Dawson lined up to take a free kick 30 yards from Montali's goal. Dawson's brilliant left-footed service easily found the Belleair Bluffs, Fla. native's head who calmly nodded home his 10
th goal of the campaign. This goal moves him to being tied for fourth in the nation in goals scored.
The Leopards retained their 2-0 lead going into halftime.
The Terriers had an early scare at the beginning of the second half, but a goal line clearance from a Terriers' defender kept the game at 2-0.
As the match continued, more and more rain poured down which caused players from both sides to slip and slide all over the pitch. Boston began to throw numbers forward as time wound down, but it wouldn't be enough. Liebich and Lombard's goals proved to be enough to secure the win.
Lafayette is back in action at 7 p.m. on Saturday to face Loyola in Baltimore, Md.
