BETHLEHEM, Pa.– The Lafayette field hockey team knocked down Lehigh 2-1 on Friday evening in the 2023 iteration of the Rivalry game on Ulrich Field. The Leopards continue along an eight-game win streak that began on Sept. 30 against Holy Cross to move to 11-5 (5-1 PL) overall.
While both teams earned opportunities in the opposing circle, the contest remained scoreless through the first half.
Play was delayed at the 14-minute mark in the third quarter due to an injury of an official; the contest resumed shortly after a replacement umpire arrived.
Following the delay,
Josephine van Wijk found the back of the net during a penalty corner at 12:13. She was assisted by
India Ralph and
Lineke Spaans on the insert and stick-stop, respectively.
Freshman
Naomi George scored the first goal of her career at 4:49 in the third period, picking up a rebound off of the goalkeeper's pads to extend the Leopard lead to 2-0.
Lehigh's Aubrey Ide cut the advantage in half, 2-1, with five minutes remaining in the game. The Maroon and White stayed aggressive on offense and poised on defense to finish victorious.
Lafayette held the advantage in total shots (18-6), but Lehigh earned more penalty corners (5-1).
Lafayette's sophomore goalkeeper
Raffi Fragomeni made one save while her Lehigh counterpart, Jenny Canoni, made seven.
The Leopards travel to Temple on Sunday to close out the regular season.
