WASHINGTON, D.C.– The Lafayette field hockey team took top-seeded American to the final period on Saturday afternoon in the 2023 Patriot League Championship match. American broke through with the game-winning goal in the 45th minute in a 1-0 final.
Each program showed great strength and stick skills in the midfield as they battled to get on the board first. While neither team was able to break the seal in the first half, both the Leopards and the Eagles earned opportunities in the circle.
The Maroon and White faced two shots in the third quarter, fending off a relentless American offensive line for the first 45 minutes of the game.
American scored the eventual golden goal in the fourth quarter. The Eagles' Agustina Roffo, assisted by Sophie Willemse, was credited with the tally, placing the ball just out of reach on a penalty corner tip (45:28).
Lafayette continued to work hard to get the ball up field for the remainder of the match, but the American unit held steady to earn a 1-0 decision.
The Leopards held the advantage in total shots (9-8). The Eagles earned three more penalty corners for a 7-4 lead inside the circle.
Lafayette's senior goalkeeper Emma Garvey made three saves and her Eagle counterpart, Bryn Underwood, made four.
The Maroon and White conclude the 2023 season with a 12-7 (5-1 PL) record.
