LAFAYETTE, La. – The Lafayette softball team opened the 2023 season on Friday afternoon at the 37
th Annual Louisiana Classics hosted by the University of Louisiana.
The Leopards led for the majority of game one before Stephen F. Austin scored five runs over the final two innings to claim a 5-1 final. The game marked the coaching debut for first-year head coach
Karavin Dew.
In the second inning,
Kylee Sweet drew a lead-off walk after running the count full. The next batter,
Grace Harvey, ripped a triple to center field to plate Sweet and give the Leopards the early advantage.
Lafayette looked to add more runs in the inning as
Kaili Reitano worked a walk to leave runners at the corners with no outs. Stephen F. Austin starter Alexis Telford struck out the next three batters to end the threat.

Jacqueline Cal and the Lafayette defense were able to hold SFA in check through the fifth inning, still with a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Mackenzie Bennett used a two-run triple to give the Lumberjacks a 2-1 lead. They added three more insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI-single from Madison Nguyen and a two-run home run from Gaby Garcia, all coming with two outs in the inning.
Lafayette stranded a pair of runners in the sixth and seventh innings of the 5-1 final. Cal took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Telford scattered four hits over seven innings, striking out eight while walking five in the circle win.
In game two, No. 20 Louisiana (formerly Louisiana-Lafayette) pounded out eight runs on seven hits in the first inning and never looked back in a 12-0 final.
Alexa Langeliers and Sophie Piskos each contributed two-run home runs in the hosts' first inning, the second of which pushed Leopard starter
Marisa Powell from the game.
The Ragin' Cajuns added four more in the third inning, sparked by a three-run double from Jourdyn Campbell off Lafayette reliever
Morrigan Gardiner. Gardiner threw four innings, giving up seven runs on five hits while Powell allowed five runs on four hits. Louisiana starter Sam Landy did not allow a hit and struck out 13 Leopard batters on the night.
