Leopards Light Up Boston on Senior Day

Men’s Basketball takes down Terriers 69-65 in overtime thriller

EASTON, Pa.- Led by three players in double figures, Lafayette earned a 69-65 overtime victory against Boston University on Saturday afternoon in Kirby Sports Center.

CJ Fulton matched his career-high with 20 points and scored the final two free throws of the afternoon, with only two seconds remaining on the clock in the overtime period.

Senior captain Leo O'Boyle, who scored 17 points, was honored prior to the game on Senior Day. Junior forward Kyle Jenkins added 11 points in the second overtime game between the two teams this season (BU won the first matchup in Boston, 73-69 on Jan. 5). Lafayette shot 45.3 percent from the floor overall and went 12-for-19 from beyond the arc.

Boston knocked down a trio of three-pointers to open the game, but the Leopards narrowly outscored the Terriers in the opening minutes, 10-9 at 13:21. Fulton led the stretch with eight points, including two 3's.

Justin Vander Baan, Jenkins and O'Boyle combined for six points to stay ahead of Boston 16-14 at the eight-minute mark. Boston used an even scoring stretch, with four Terriers netting points, to compete with the Leopards over the next five minutes.

O'Boyle secured a 24-20 Lafayette advantage with back-to-back shots from beyond the arc at 3:39. A Vander Baan turn-around jumper was the final bucket of the first half as Lafayette led 33-27 at the buzzer.

Sophomores Devin Hines and Vander Baan put a stop to a Terriers' 5-0 streak to hold the lead, 37-35 at the 14-minute mark. Three-pointers from O'Boyle and Ryan Pettit negated a 6-0 run by Boston at 11:06, with the Leopards ahead 44-41.

An 8-6 Lafayette stretch occurred down to the five-minute mark kept the Leopards ahead, 52-47. Hines got the Leopards back on the board at 5:39 with four points, followed by Jenkins with a successful shot beyond the arc.

O'Boyle sank a three-pointer at 3:23 to combat four Boston free throws and stay four ahead of the Terriers at 55-51 (3:02).

A pair of Fulton free throws was interrupted by two points each from Boston's Walter Whyte and Miles Brewster at 1:29 to come within two points, 57-55. Whyte scored a layup with 0.7 seconds left to play in regulation for a 57-57 tie heading into overtime. Whyte finished with 20 points and six rebounds.

The Leopards outscored the Terriers 12-8 in overtime, with Jenkins netting six of those points. Fulton added four, followed by Hines and O'Boyle with one apiece.

Fulton scored the final points of the afternoon, two free throws with two seconds remaining that sealed the 69-65 victory inside Kirby Sports Center.

The Scranton, Pa. native was joined by his parents, Lorilynn and John O'Boyle, as well as head coach Mike Jordan at half-court prior to tip-off.

Lafayette will travel to Loyola Md. on Wednesday at 7 p.m., looking to complete a season sweep of the Greyhounds.
