Army’s Quick Start Pushes Past Leopards at Annual Play4Kay Game

Andrews and Smith reach double figures for Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Army got off to a quick offensive start and never slowed, pulling away to a 72-51 final over Lafayette women's basketball on Saturday at Kirby Sports Center.

Two players reached double figures for the Leopards, paced by Makayla Andrews with 14 points and nine rebounds and Halee Smith with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Kay Donahue continued with quality minutes, adding nine points, five rebounds and a pair of steals.

It was the annual Play4Kay game on College Hill, as the Leopards debuted their pink uniforms, signifying their support for women fighting cancer and in honor of Kay Yow and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund which is dedicated to fighting all cancers affecting women. Lafayette honored breast cancer survivors in attendance at the game.

Army came out hot, shooting 59 percent from the floor in the first quarter to take a 27-13 lead. The Black Knights hit 6-of-7 three-pointers, with Reese Ericson and Lauren Lithgow each accounting for two, and led by as many as 15 in the opening quarter.

The Leopards cut into the lead several times in the first half on three layups, trimming it to 10 points on each occasion. The final 10-point margin came at 5:12 on a Smith layup as Lafayette trailed 36-26.

The visitors closed the half with a 6-2 clip to lead 43-28 going into the locker room. Ericson led the way for Army with 14 points that included four three-pointers. Abby Antognoli and Smith each dropped in seven for the Leopards in the opening half.

Army maintained its margin through the second half, buoyed by a balanced scoring effort that included 17 from Sabria Hunter, 14 from Ericson, 11 from Natalie Rhine and 10 from Lithgow.

The visitors held a significant advantage on the glass, out-rebounding Lafayette 48-27 while also limiting the Leopards' offense to 36 percent shooting on the afternoon.

Lafayette has just three Patriot League regular-season games remaining, next playing at Colgate at Wednesday at 7 p.m.
