DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Lafayette baseball team dropped the second game of a three-game set, 13-11, to Davidson on Saturday at Wilson Field.
Davidson scored four runs in the first inning, punctuated by a three-run home run. The Wildcats added four more runs in the fifth and another three in the sixth to take an 11-0 lead.
In the seventh, Lafayette responded with two runs. Sophomore Kaleb Willis reached base on a throwing error and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior Justin Weiss drew a walk which put runners on the corners. Another wild pitch allowed Willis to score from third. Later in the inning, freshman Noah Hajdu hit an RBI infield single, which scored Weiss from third, cutting the Wildcats' lead to 11-2.
Davidson added two more runs to its tally in the bottom of the eighth inning, making the score 13-2.
In the ninth inning, the Leopards put together a rally. Senior Patrick Vandenbergh walked to start the inning. Freshman Eli Kapkowski followed with a single to center field. Hajdu reached based on a fielder's choice, which scored Vandenbergh. Another walk to freshman John Ahler loaded the bases for sophomore Easton Brenner, who clubbed a grand slam over the fence in left center field, clearing the bases and making the score 13-7.
The Leopards were not finished yet. Senior Seif Ingram was hit by a pitch and Willis walked. Weiss doubled down the left field line, scoring Ingram. Another double by Vandenbergh scored Weiss, cutting the Wildcats' lead to 13-9. Kapkowski grounded out to the shortstop, but Vandenbergh and Weiss scored on the play. The Leopard rally fell just short as the next batter, Hajdu, grounded out, and the game ended with a final score of 13-11.
Lafayette concludes its three game series with Davidson on Sunday at 1 p.m.
