BALTIMORE, Md. – The Maroon and White closed out the UMBC Retriever Round Robin with a 5-1 loss to the hosts on Sunday afternoon.
The Leopards struck first, pushing across a run in the first inning. Sophomore
Harlie Bickett led off the contest with a single, and a throwing error placed her on second base. The next batter, Kylie Sweet, did her job and advanced Bickett to third. Senior
Kaili Reitano doubled home Bickett for the early advantage. The Leopards had runners at the corners with one out, but settled for the lone run.
UMBC tied the game in the second inning, scoring a run on two hits. Then, in the second inning, Ashley Della Guardia lifted a 2-0 offer from
Jacqueline Cal over the fence in center field for a 3-1 lead. The hosts added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth to stretch the final to 5-1.
Cal threw 2.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits. Junior
Bailey Langford made her first pitching appearance of the young season, allowing a run on two hits over an inning and a third. Soph.
Morrigan Gardiner closed out the game, striking out two while giving up an unearned run on two hits over two frames. For UMBC, Madison O'Berg was the circle winner, tossing five innings while collecting four strikeouts.
The Leopards will next be back in action on spring break on March 10-14 in Madeira Beach, Fla. when they are slated to play seven games.
