MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Lafayette softball ran into a dominant pitching performance from Breanna Vasquez who led Iowa to an 8-0 final on Tuesday morning.
Vazquez (7-1) struck out 11 of the 16 batters she faced in the Leopards' penultimate game on their spring break swing to Madeira Beach, Fla. She took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Leopard senior
Kaili Reitano ripped a lead-off double off the wall in left centerfield.
The Iowa offense got to Leopard junior starter
Kailee Sawai for two runs in the first on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI-single. The Hawkeyes added one in the second on a Tory Bennett double. Sawai limited the damage in that inning, striking out the final batter. Iowa led 3-0.
Iowa padded its lead in the fourth, using four doubles and a triple to score five runs and put the game out of reach.
Sawai took the loss, allowing eight runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Classmate
Jacqueline Cal came on in relief in the fourth, allowing one hit while striking out one in an inning of work.
Lafayette will play Iona at 11:30 a.m.
