EMMITSBURG, Md. – Lafayette closed out the Mount St. Mary's Tournament with losses to Albany and Mount St. Mary's on Sunday.
In the tournament finale, the hosts grabbed an early lead. Kassidy Johnson connected for a two-out double in the second inning that handed Mount St. Mary's a 1-0 margin.
That lead lasted until the fourth inning, when the Leopards tied the game. Freshman
Marisa Powell battled through an eight-pitch at bat before going the opposite way with a single down the right field line to plate classmate
Megan Coyle.
The Mount re-captured the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tori Bowles hit a two-run home run off Leopard starter
Jacqueline Cal. MSM added another run in the inning via a Johnson RBI-double. Sophomore
Morrigan Gardiner came on in relief to get the next two batters and end the rally with the Leopards trailing 4-1.
Lafayette was retired in order in the top of the seventh by Elizabeth King, who collected the circle victory after throwing the final 3.1 innings.
In the first game of the day, the Leopards gave up five runs in the top of the first. Albany cranked out five hits and benefited from four Leopard errors. It was more of the same potent Albany offense in the second inning with the Great Danes adding eight more runs, including three on a Jordan Nasto home run.
Lafayette got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Senior catcher
Grace Harvey came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. She smacked a 3-1 offering to the wall in right center field, clearing the bases with her first double of the season. The Leopards added one more run in the fifth on a first-and-third steal attempt that scored
Harlie Bickett to push the final to 16-4.
Powell was the pitcher of record for the Maroon and White in her second start of the season, while Wendi Hammon secured the circle victory, allowing three runs on four hits over three innings.
The Leopards will open Patriot League on March 25-26, hosting Lehigh in a three-game series at Metzgar Fields.
