Bethlehem, Pa. - The Lafayette baseball team was victorious over rival Lehigh on Friday, defeating the Mountain Hawks 8-6 at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park.
Lehigh's offense got started early. In the bottom of the second, the Mountain Hawks scored five runs on solo home runs by Rafe Perich and Justin Butler, an RBI-single by Dom Patrizi and a two-run double by Jake Whitlinger.
Lafayette responded in the top of the fourth, when senior Kyle Chmielewski singled through the left side and then senior Pete Ciuffreda laced an RBI-single to right field, scoring Chmielewski from second. Two batters later, senior Seif Ingram ripped a two-run triple to right center field. The next batter was Ethan Swidler who blasted his second home run of the year to left field, making the score 5-4.
The Leopards jumped out in front in the eighth. Ciuffreda led off the frame with a solo home run which tied the game 5-5. The home run was Ciuffreda's league-leading ninth of the season. Sophomore Michael Zarrillo followed with a double to left field and then Ingram reached on a Lehigh error, which allowed Zarrillo to advance to third. Junior Blaze Fadio gave Lafayette the lead, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field and making the score 6-5.
The Maroon and White extended their lead in the top of the ninth. With two outs, both senior Patrick Vandenbergh and Ciuffreda walked, putting runners on first and second for Zarrillo. Zarrillo lined a two-run double to center field scoring Vandenbergh and Ciuffreda and giving Lafayette an 8-5 advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, Lehigh was able to score a run on an RBI-groundout by Tyler Young, but freshman James Reese shut the door on the Mountain Hawks as the Leopards closed out an 8-6 rivalry win.
Freshman Pat Walega started the game on the mound for the Leopards, pitching 1.1 innings and striking out two. Freshman Trace Florio pitched 4.2 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just two hits and striking out four. Sophomore Chase Barley collected his second win of the season for Lafayette, throwing a scoreless seventh inning. Reese earned his second save of the season, pitching 2.0 innings and striking out three. Will Grisack took the loss for the Mountain Hawks.
The Lafayette Nine are next in action on Saturday when they continue their four-game series at Lehigh with a doubleheader that starts at noon.
