EASTON, Pa. – Army's two-run home run in the first inning proved to be the decisive score in a 2-1 final over Lafayette softball on Friday afternoon.
Â
The visiting Black Knights did all of their scoring in the first inning and all of it came off the bat of Taylor Brown. Brown, hitting in the third spot in the lineup, connected with a Kailee Sawai offering, lifting it over the wall in left center field for the 2-0 advantage. Â
Â
The Leopards cut the Army lead to 2-1 with a run in the third inning. Freshman Megan Coyle singled and scored when classmate Kylee Sweet ripped a single into right center field. Coyle finished with two hits on the day.
Â
Lafayette had another scoring chance in the fourth inning. Senior Kaili Reitano drew a lead-off walk and the Leopards pinch ran with Erica Brasher. The next batter, Grace Harvey laid down a bunt and was out at first on the sacrifice, but then Brasher was thrown out at third on a close play where Brasher appeared to get in under the tag.
Â
Army starter Amanda Eaglin faced 10 batters over the last three innings to close out the game. She struck out eight and walked one in the win. Sawai fanned four, allowing two runs on four hits over seven. Â
Â
The teams will be back at it on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
