No. 7 Loyola Tops Leopards in Patriot League Opener

Sargent, Lehman, Kraham and Sullivan each contribute two goals

BALTIMORE, Md. - Four players each scored a pair of goals for the Leopards, but No. 7 Loyola, Md. used a strong third quarter to pull away to a 15-11 final over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon. It was the Patriot League opener for both teams.

Sophomore Liam Sargent led the way for the Leopards, scoring two goals on the day while also adding an assist. Juniors Peter Lehman and Kalman Kraham and sophomore Riley Sullivan all added two goals apiece for the Leopards. Freshman Jack Irish, junior John Mathes and senior Ryan Duncan all netted one goal each. 

Loyola was led by Matthew Minicus who tallied four goals. Davis Lindsey also made a big contribution for the Greyhounds, netting three goals. 

Sargent gave the Leopards an early 1-0 lead as he scored the first goal of the game at the 13:13 mark. Loyola quickly fought back, scoring three goals before Lehman contributed his first two scores with a little over four minutes left in the first quarter. At 1:43 in the first, Duncan scored his first goal of the day off an assist from Sargent. 

Heading into the second quarter, the Leopards were down 4-3, but a quick goal by Mathes at 14:06 tied things up at 4-4. Loyola closed the second quarter with two goals to head into the half leading 6-4. 

Coming out of the half, Loyola struck first. The Greyhounds took advantage of a man-up opportunity to take a 7-4 lead. Lafayette responded quickly, scoring less than a minute later from Kraham's stick. The Leopards trailed 7-5 with 13 minutes left in the third. 

The third quarter ended up being a hot one for both offenses as a total of 10 goals were scored. Loyola reeled off four straight scores to extend its lead to 11-5 with 6:41 left to go in the third. 

Lafayette answered with 3:26 left in the third when Lehman tallied his second of the day. The Leopards closed the third quarter with Sullivan and Irish both scoring to help shrink Loyola's lead to 12-8 heading to the fourth. 

Loyola scored two goals to begin the final quarter, before Sargent retaliated with a Leopard  goal to keep the deficit at 14-9 with 7:03 left on the clock. 

Loyola scored a final goal with 4:30 left. The Leopards made a late rally, with Sullivan and Kraham each connecting for a goal with less than 30 seconds left on the clock to run the final to 15-11. 

Freshman Joe Doherty played all 60 minutes in goal for the Leopards, stopping 14 shots. Loyola's Luke Staudt played 56 minutes while making 12 saves in goal.

The Leopards will be back in action Friday as they travel to take on the Army Black Knights.
