Leopards Drop Mid-Week Contest Against Lehigh

Zarrillo and Swidler both had two RBIs

EASTON Pa. – The Lafayette baseball team fell to rival Lehigh 9-5 on Wednesday at Hilton Rahn '51 Field at Kamine Stadium. The Leopards were led by sophomore Michael Zarrillo and freshman Ethan Swidler, who both had two RBIs in the game.

Lehigh jumped out to 6-0 lead in the top of the second. The Mountain Hawks scored on a two-run double by Gerard Sweeney, a Lafayette error, a two-run double by Casey Rother and Tyler Young advanced home during a rundown.

In the bottom of the second, junior Blaze Fadio led off the inning for Lafayette with a double to left center field and advanced to third on a passed ball. Ethan Swidler drove in Fadio on an RBI-groundout, to make the score 6-1.

In the top of the fourth, the Mountain Hawks added to their tally on a two-run home run by Rother to center field, increasing their lead to 8-1.

The Leopards added a run in the fourth on an RBI-double to right field by Swidler. Senior Seif Ingram, who had reached on a single to lead off the inning, scored on the play.

Lafayette again scored in the fifth, as Zarrillo reached base on an error, which drove in sophomore Easton Brenner, making the score 8-3.

The Leopards continued to cut into the Mountain Hawks' lead in the sixth. Sophomore Kaleb Willis and Brenner both drew walks. Then senior Pete Ciuffreda lined an RBI-single to center field and Zarrillo ripped an RBI-double down the left field line, scoring Willis and Brenner, respectively.

Lehigh added an insurance run in the seventh as Dom Patrizi hit an RBI-double to left field, making the final score 9-5.

Ben Christian collected the win for Lehigh and Alex Bouchard earned the save.  Junior Adam Bogosian took the loss for the Leopards.

Lafayette will travel to Worcester, Mass. for a three-game series against Holy Cross that starts at 6 p.m. on Friday. Friday's game was originally slated to be played on Sunday, but was moved up due to weather concerns.  Saturday's doubleheader remains unchanged and will start at 1 p.m.
