Baseball Defeats Rival Lehigh in Series Finale

Skapinetz strikes out 10, propelling Lafayette to victory

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore Joe Skapinetz powered Lafayette baseball to a 4-0 victory in Sunday's series finale at Lehigh, registering 10 strikeouts and earning his first win of the season.

The Leopards won three of four contests at Lehigh this weekend, capturing the series against the Mountain Hawks.

In the final game of the series, the Leopards jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Senior Seif Ingram singled to lead off the inning and then stole second. Freshman Ethan Swidler ripped a single to left field, scoring Ingram, to give the Leopards the lead.

In the seventh, Lafayette extended its advantage. Junior Blaze Fadio doubled to begin the frame and was followed by junior Justin Grech who was hit by a pitch. Both players advanced on a wild pitch, putting runners at second and third for sophomore Easton Brenner. Brenner slashed a two-run single up the middle, extending the Lafayette lead to 3-0. Three batters later, Ingram drove in Brenner from third on an RBI-bunt single, making the score 4-0.

The Lafayette pitching staff controlled the rest of the game, not allowing the Mountain Hawks to score a run while sealing the 4-0 final.

The Maroon and White excelled on the mound. Skapinetz got the start for the Leopards and collected his first win of the season, scattering four hits over 6.0 innings of work, striking out 10 while not allowing a run on a steady diet of fastballs. Senior Dylan Siesky came in from the bullpen in the seventh and pitched two scoreless frames, striking out two. Freshman James Reese closed out the game for the Leopards, pitching the ninth and striking out two of the three batters that he faced. Ben Christian took the loss for Lehigh.

Prior to the final game of the series, the Leopards and Mountain Hawks completed the second game of Saturday's doubleheader that was suspended due to weather. Play was resumed with the Leopards batting in the top of the seventh, with two runners on base and the Mountain Hawks leading 10-5. With two outs in the inning, Brenner lined a two-run single to right center field, scoring both Swidler and Ingram. The Leopards were not able to put any more runs on the board, dropping the game 10-7.

Will Grisack earned the win for the Mountain Hawks and Jacob Maurer took the loss for the Leopards.

The Lafayette Nine will next be in action on Tuesday when they travel to Delaware for the Liberty Bell Classic semifinal.
