EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette softball team dropped the first game of a doubleheader to Syracuse, 10-2. Game two was suspended because of weather in the top of the seventh with the Orange leading 12-3. Game two will be resumed on Sunday at noon, followed by the final game in the series.
In game one, the Orange jumped out to a 5-0 lead, scoring a run in the first inning and four runs in the second inning.Â
In the third inning, Lafayette responded. SophomoreÂ
Harlie Bickett walked to lead off the inning and was followed by freshman
Kylee Sweet who hit a single to right center field. Senior
Kaili Reitano walked, and with the bases loaded, freshman
Megan Coyle hit a two-run single to center field, which made the score 5-2.
Syracuse added five more runs in the sixth,making the final score 10-2.
Madison Knight collected the win for the Orange, pitching 6.0 innings, giving up two runs, six hits and striking out six. Sophomore
Morrigan Gardiner took the loss for the Leopards.
In game two, which began under blustery skies, Syracuse again got on the board early, scoring three runs in the first and another run in the second.
Lafayette scored two runs in the third on an RBI-double to right center field by junior
Paige Sandidge and a Syracuse error which allowed Sandidge to score from second, making the score 4-2.
The Orange scored a single run in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth, to extend their lead to 9-2.
The Leopards added to their tally in the sixth on a solo home run by Coyle to left field, which made the score 9-3.
In the seventh, Syracuse plated three more runs, which brought the score to 12-3, before play was suspended due to weather.
The second game of the doubleheader will be completed on Sunday at noon, with the final game of the series with the Orange to follow.
