EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette softball team dropped its series finale with Syracuse on Sunday 11-1. Before the final game of the series began, the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, which had been suspended due to weather in the top of the seventh, was completed with the Leopards losing the game to the Orange 12-3.
The final game of the weekend series started under sunny skies. Neither team was able to score until the fourth inning when Syracuse plated a run on a RBI-single down the left field line by Jackie Pengel, which gave the Orange a 1-0 leadÂ
Syracuse added four more runs in the fifth, scoring on RBI-singles by Tessa Galipeau and Peyton Schemmer along with RBI-doubles by Kelly Breen and Madison Knight, bringing the score to 5-0.
Lafayette got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when junior
Paige Sandidge singled to center field and then came in to score on an RBI-single by sophomore
Kaya Ciccone-Cozart later in the inning, which brought the tally to 5-1.
In the seventh, Syracuse continued to add to its lead, scoring six runs in the frame which made the final score 11-1.
Knight collected the win for the Orange, pitching all seven innings and only allowing five hits and one run, while recording 10 strikeouts. Junior
Jacqueline Cal took the loss for the Leopards, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up 10 hits, five runs and recording a strikeout.
Before the series finale, the seventh inning of the second game of Saturday's doubleheader that was suspended due to thunderstorms was completed. On Saturday, before the game was suspended, Sandidge had an RBI-double in the third and freshman
Megan Coyle hit a solo home run in the sixth. After play was resumed, neither team was able to score a run in the seventh inning and Syracuse won the game by a final score of 12-3.Â
Lindsey Hendrix earned the win for Syracuse. Junior
Kailee Sawai took the loss for the Leopards.
Lafayette is next in action when it travels to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on the Raiders of Colgate for a three-game series that starts at noon on Saturday.
