No. 3 Virginia Defeats Leopards

ACC powerhouse scores 11 goals in third quarter

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team was defeated by No. 3 Virginia 20-11 in its final home contest on Tuesday evening.
 
The Leopards were led by juniors Kalman Kraham and Peter Lehman with three and two goals, respectively.
 
Virginia's Xander Dickson scored four goals and dished out four assists.
 
Sophomore Riley Sullivan scored Lafayette's lone goal of the first quarter, as the Cavaliers led 3-1 heading into the second.
 
Virginia went on a 5-1 run in the second quarter with Dickson and Griffin Schutz netting two goals apiece. Kraham scored the Leopards' goal as Virginia led 8-2 at intermission.
 
The Cavaliers reeled off 11 goals in the third quarter, as Shellenberger led the way with three. Lehman, Kraham, Macklin Fitzpatrick and Tommy McGee all recorded goals in the quarter with Virginia taking a 19-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
Virginia's Mike Prestipino was given a two-minute unreleasable penalty for an illegal body check with 19 seconds remaining in the third to carry over into the final quarter. Lafayette capitalized on three out of four man-up opportunities with Lehman, senior Ryan Duncan and freshman Nick Muller contributing goals, but Virginia ultimately held on to the 20-11 final.
 
Rookie goalkeeper Joe Doherty made four saves over three quarters, while sophomore Gabe Cummins recorded three in the fourth quarter. Junior Louis Baloh led Lafayette with three caused turnovers, and junior Jacob Freeman scooped up seven ground balls.
 
Reigning Patriot League face-off specialist of the week, senior James Turco went 13-for-26 from the "x" and grabbed five ground balls.
 
Lafayette has secured the No. 6 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and the Leopards will face No. 3 seed on May 2 with a location, time and opponent to be determined.
