Lafayette Softball Takes Colgate Series With 4-3 Finale

Bickett, Harvey and Coyle all belt home runs

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Lafayette used three home runs and a strong relief pitching performance to power to a conference series victory over Colgate on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Harlie Bickett, freshman Megan Coyle and senior Grace Harvey each hit home runs and freshman Kylee Sweet added an RBI-double in a 4-3 victory in the series finale.

The conference series victory for the Leopards is the first for the program since 2018 when they also took 2-of-3 from the Raiders.

Bickett started the series finale in style, ripping a 1-1 pitch out of the field for her second home run of the season and a 1-0 lead.

The advantage was short-lived, as Colgate's lead-off hitter, Rachel Carney, returned the favor with a solo home run that knotted the game at 1-1.

Colgate re-took the lead in the second inning. A lead-off triple and an infield single gave the hosts a 2-1 lead. In that inning, Jacqueline Cal came on in relief of Morrigan Gardiner after the triple and finished out the game.

Lafayette tied the game in the third inning. Sweet doubled home pinch runner Kylene Gooch to knot the game at 2-2.

In the home half, the back and forth continued when Taylor Ludwick's solo homer handed the lead back to Colgate, 3-2.

Lafayette re-tied the game in the fifth inning on Harvey's first home run of the season. Then in the sixth, Coyle delivered the go-ahead run, a solo shot for her team-leading sixth home run of the season. Lafayette led 4-3.

Colgate threatened in the sixth, but Cal and the defense battled through a lead-off single to strand two Raider baserunners.

In the seventh, the junior got the first two outs of the inning before surrendering a double. Cal closed out the game with a lineout for her third victory of the season, allowing one run on seven hits over six innings.

Lafayette returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Marist in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
