WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lafayette baseball team dropped its series finale 9-6 to Army on Sunday at Doubleday Field. Senior
Pete Ciuffreda tied Lafayette's single-season home run record in the third inning.
The Black Knights were first to score, driving in three runs in the second on a solo home run to center field by Ross Friedrick, an RBI triple to left center by Braden Golinski and an RBI-double down the right field line by Coleson Titus.
In the third inning, Lafayette responded with two runs. Sophomore
Easton Brenner reached on an error and was followed by Ciuffreda, who blasted his 12
th home run of the season, sending it over the right field fence and tying Lafayette's single-season home run record with Leopards' head coach
A.J. Miller '11 and Bob Osipower '00.
Army added another run in the fifth on a Lafayette error. In the sixth, the Black Knights extended their lead to three on an RBI-single to left field by Addison Ainsworth, making the score 5-2.
In the top of the seventh inning, Lafayette loaded the bases for sophomore
Michael Zarrillo. Zarrillo belted a grand slam to left field, which drove in Ciuffreda, freshman
John Ahler and Brenner, to give Lafayette the lead, 6-5. The home run was Zarrillo's seventh of the season.
Army stormed back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs on an RBI-single through the left side by Kevin Dubrule, an RBI single to center field by Golinski and bases-loaded walks to Ethan Ellis and Ainsworth, putting Army in the lead, 9-6.
The Leopards were unable to plate another run, falling to the Black Knights by a 9-6 final.
Sean Dennehy recorded the win for the Black Knights, pitching 1.2 innings, giving up three hits, three runs and striking out four. Patrick Melampy earned the save, tossing a scoreless ninth inning and striking out two. Freshman
Luke Craytor took the loss for the Leopards, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up four hits, four runs and striking out eight.
The Leopards return home on Saturday to face Holy Cross in doubleheader at noon.
