BOSTON, Mass. – Lafayette came one out away from closing close out its second Patriot League win of the season, but first-place Boston U. scored two runs in the seventh inning for a 3-2 decision in the series finale on Sunday.
Â
Senior
Kaili Reitano and freshman
Kylee Sweet each had two hits on the afternoon for the Leopards who closed out their third Patriot League series.
Â
The starting pitchers kept the offenses in check in the early going, maintaining a scoreless contest through five innings. Â Reitano helped ensure that, making at diving save at the end of the fifth to hold BU off the scoreboard.
Â
Reitano made even more noise in the top of the sixth. Following a lead-off walk to Sweet, Reitano ripped a 3-2 offering over the wall for the 2-0 Leopards' lead.
Â
The Terriers cut the Leopards margin in half in the sixth, scoring on Emily Gant's RBI-groundout.
Â
Leopard starter
Morrigan Gardiner and the defense took a 2-1 advantage into the bottom of the seventh. Gardiner immediately worked a line out. She gave up an infield single to Lauren Nett which was followed by a pinch-hit, infield single from Lizzy Avery. Lafayette moved one out closer when Nett was retired at third base on Avery's single. Â The next batter, Audrey Sellers, reached on the third of four infield singles in the inning.
Â
Kayla Roncin came to the plate, delivering a ball to shortstop which
Harlie Bickett played to first for the apparent final out of the game. The first base umpire ruled the throw tardy and the hit tied the game at 2-2. The Terriers closed out the contest when Caitlin Coker singled home the third run of the game.
Â
Gardiner allowed three runs on eight hits over 6.2 innings in the loss. Kasey Ricard struck out four over two innings to grab the win.
Â
Lafayette returns home to kick off its second eight-game homestand of the season at 3 p.m. on Wednesday with a doubleheader vs. Fairleigh Dickinson.
