Leopards Drop Doubleheader with Army

Zarrillo hits his ninth home run of the season

EASTON Pa. – The Lafayette baseball dropped both halves of a doubleheader with Army on Sunday, 21-6 and 7-1.

In game one, Army jumped out in front on a solo home run to right field by Sam Ruta in the first inning. The Black Knights added another run on a sacrifice fly by William Parker in the second.

Lafayette responded in the third when both senior Pete Ciuffreda and sophomore Michael Zarrillo drew walks. Then senior Seif Ingram lined an RBI-single to center field that scored Zarrillo and made the tally 2-1.

The Black Knights broke the game open in the fourth, scoring 13 runs. Army added another five runs in the top of the sixth, which made the score 20-1.

The Leopards countered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Kyle Chmielewski singled to right field and sophomore Ben Petrone followed with a two-run home run, also to right field. The home run was Petrone's first of the season. Later in the inning, Ciuffreda drew a walk and the next batter, Zarrillo, blasted a two-run home run to right field. Ingram continued the inning for the Leopards, hitting a double to left center and then scoring on an RBI-single by junior Justin Grech, which made the score 20-6.

Mike Ruggieri collected the win for the Black Knights. Freshman Trace Florio took the loss for the Leopards.

In game two, Army opened the scoring in the first, scoring two runs on RBI-singles by Ross Friedrick and Brendan Golinski. The Black Knights added another run in the fourth on an RBI-triple to right center by Golinski, and one more run in the fifth on an RBI-groundout by Ruta.

Lafayette got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Chmielewski doubled down the left field line to lead off the frame. Petrone blooped an RBI- double to center field, scoring Chmielewski, which made the score 4-1.

Army extended its lead with two runs in the sixth and another in the eighth for the 7-1 final.

Trevor Finan picked up the win for the Black Knights, pitching 3.1 innings, one runs on three hits while fanning two. Sophomore Joe Skapinetz took the loss for the Leopards, tossing four innings while surrendering three runs on five hits with a strikeout.

The Leopards are next in action when they travel to West Point, N.Y. to face Army in the Patriot League Tournament semifinal on Saturday.
