Four-Run Third Inning Closes out Leopards

Coyle smacks seventh home run of the season

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lafayette's 2023 season came to an end with a 5-2 loss at Bucknell on Sunday afternoon. The Bison posted four runs in the third inning which proved to be the difference in the series finale.

Bucknell scored a run in the second on a Kailyn Lorbeter double for the early advantage. In the third inning, Lorbeter again sparked the offense, bringing home two runs on a single while Chase Knapp plated two more via a double, as Bucknell led 5-0.

The Leopards got on the scoreboard in fourth inning when freshman Megan Coyle smacked her seventh home run of the season. That blast tied her for eighth all-time for home runs in a season at Lafayette, matching Jen Rothrock's mark from 1995. It is the most home runs in a season for a Leopard since Paige Grover had eight in 2018.

The Leopard bats were quiet in the fifth and sixth before Lafayette scored a final run in the top of the seventh. Bailey Langford managed a one-out single to get things started. Senior Jasmine Nguyen's ground out put Langford in scoring position. Classmate Erica Brasher's infield single put runners on the corners with two outs. That brought senior Julia Roman to the plate and she battled through a nine-pitch at bat that include six foul balls before ripping a single up the middle to score Langford and push the final to 5-2.

Junior Kailee Sawai allowed five runs on four hits over 2.2 inning in the circle loss. Classmate Jacqueline Cal threw the final 3.2 innings in relief of Sawai and did not allow a hit. Olivia Marinelli claimed the win, yielding one run on two hits over three innings.

Lafayette finishes its season with an 8-36-1 record and a 4-14 mark in conference play.
